Forensic geneticists have developed an integrated microfluidic system that rapidly profiles 89 Y-chromosome single-nucleotide polymorphisms (Y-SNPs) in a single run, reported in Electrophoresis.
The system shows excellent reproducibility, with a coefficient of variation below 0.5%, and reliably detects male DNA in mixtures—as little as a 2% male fraction in male-female mixtures and a 33% male fraction in male-male mixtures.
By cutting reliance on conventional laboratory workflows, the platform supports rapid on-site Y-SNP analysis. Its intended uses include paternal lineage tracing, ancestry inference, and the interpretation of mixed forensic stains, aligning closely with the needs of forensic genealogy.
