Ancestry has released its 2025 AncestryDNA origins update, adding 68 new European regions and refining existing ones—one of the company’s largest reference-panel overhauls to date.
The update expands the reference panel to more than 185,000 samples, sharply improving resolution. Broader regions are now split into more specific subregions; for example, a single Irish region has been divided into four new Irish regions.
Crucially, customers’ raw DNA has not changed—what changes is the scientific reference panel. As reference samples become finer-grained, the ancestral regions and percentages assigned to each user are updated automatically, so existing customers receive more granular ancestry estimates without retesting.
