Shimao Ancient-DNA Study Named Among China’s Top Ten Archaeology News of 2025

“Ancient DNA from the Shimao site revealing Neolithic genetic relationships” has been named among China’s top ten domestic archaeology news stories of 2025, according to results reposted by the Yulin municipal government.

The research was led by Qiaomei Fu’s team together with the Shaanxi Academy of Archaeology. Spanning 13 years, it applied large-scale, high-resolution nuclear-genome analysis to 169 ancient human remains. The work was presented in a dedicated National Cultural Heritage Administration release on 27 November 2025 and published in Nature.

The study traces the Shimao population mainly to local late-Yangshao ancestry and reconstructs a four-generation patrilineal, patrilocal lineage; roughly nine in ten victims in the East Gate pits were male, while female victims were concentrated in elite burial areas. The results are regarded as a landmark of integrated archaeology and ancient-genetics research.
