On 30 October 2025, the 23andMe Research Institute announced the appointment of a Privacy Advisory Board, against a backdrop of major upheaval at the company.
The move follows a 2023 data breach affecting roughly 6.9 million users and a subsequent $18 million settlement. The company has since gone through multiple rounds of layoffs and, in March 2025, sold assets to Regeneron Pharmaceuticals for $305 million.
23andMe says the board is intended to strengthen protection and ethical governance of users’ genetic data and to address persistent public concern over the privacy risks of direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic testing. As the DTC industry faces broader data-security scrutiny, the step is seen as an attempt to rebuild user trust through governance.
