Researchers have released a new set of ancient human genomes from eastern Kazakhstan, at the boundary between the Eurasian steppe and the Inner Asian mountain forest belt, published in Science Advances.
Until now, limited ancient genome coverage had left the genetic history of Inner Asian hunter-gatherers incomplete, with little known about their origins, transformations, and contacts with neighboring groups.
The new data reveal the dynamic genetic legacy of these hunter-gatherers and their interactions with surrounding East and Central Asian populations. Sitting at the eastern end of the Eurasian steppe, the region is closely tied to northern East Asian migration corridors, and the genomes add a new anchor for understanding prehistoric movement and admixture along this route.
