Researchers have released the largest Hui genomic resource to date, comprising sequencing or genotyping data for 2,280 Hui individuals from 30 distinct regions, published in Molecular Biology and Evolution.
Analyses resolve five distinct genetic lineages shaped by geography and differing directions of gene flow. The northwest and northern Hui lineages trace to the demographic expansion along the overland Silk Road during the Tang and Yuan periods, whereas southern and coastal/island lineages reflect the cultural diffusion of the maritime Silk Road.
The findings support an admixture model of Hui formation in which demographic migration and sociocultural diffusion acted together rather than in opposition. The resource also fills a data gap for a population long underrepresented in global human genome studies.
