By mid-October 2025, the Hong Kong Genome Project (HKGP) had recruited more than 52,000 participants and processed over 9,000 TB of genomic data—already exceeding its original target of 40,000 to 50,000. The Hong Kong Genome Institute (HKGI) has also released its 2025–30 strategic plan.
Under the new plan, HKGI aims to accumulate 60,000 to 70,000 whole-genome sequences by 2030. The program aims to build a precision-medicine foundation for Chinese populations and is now establishing a South China population genomic database.
Reports note the project has already helped identify a previously undocumented disease, an early sign of how large-scale genomic data can aid clinical diagnosis. For Hong Kong and South China, the milestone moves the program from building population resources toward serving medical practice.
