Researchers have launched HiLand Resource (HLR), an integrated database of phenotypic, genomic, and genotype-phenotype association data on high-altitude human populations, described in Genomics, Proteomics & Bioinformatics (Vol. 23, Issue 5). The resource already holds more than two million records covering the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau and adjacent high-elevation regions.
High-altitude adaptation research has long been hampered by scattered datasets and inconsistent sampling and analytical standards that make cross-study comparison difficult. HLR addresses this gap by offering a single gateway to query genetic variants, phenotype measurements, and association results for highland groups, supporting data reuse and comparative analyses.
The team frames the resource as essential infrastructure for studying the origins of plateau populations, physiological adaptation to high altitude, and broader questions in population genetics, as well as for future highland health and precision-medicine research.
